Viet Nam discusses human rights efforts in Myanmar, DPRK, Iran

A Vietnamese diplomat has joined discussion on the human rights situation in Myanmar, Iran and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) at a United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) dialogue in Geneva, Switzerland, on March 17.

Nguyen Trung Thanh, Vietnamese permanent representative to the UN, the World Trade Organisation and other international organisations in Geneva, praised Myanmar’s commitments in economic-political reform, democratisation, national harmonisation and the promotion of citizens’ rights.
He declared the support of Viet Nam, the UN Human Rights Council and the international community to Myanmar during this historical period.
Thanh laid stress on the need for countries to strengthen their cooperation with Myanmar on the basis of respecting its sovereignty and independence.
Myanmar is on the right way to peace, security and prosperity, he said, affirming Viet Nam’s goodwill and endeavours to help the country improve people’s living standards and promote human rights.
Viet Nam also stands ready to share experience with Myanmar in national reconstruction, socio-economic development and regional and international integration, he said.
At another dialogue on the DPRK, Thanh underlined the need for all relevant sides to persistently follow constructive dialogue to seek long-term solutions for the ongoing tensions in the Korean Peninsula.
Top priorities should be given to humanitarian issues, focusing on those pertaining to food, education, healthcare and support for women and children, he said.
Regarding Iran, the diplomat said the country’s recent energy programme is expected to usher in a new period of cooperation between Iran and the world, contributing to consolidating security and peace in the region.
Other topics up for discussion at the UNHRC’s 25 th session include the rights of migrants, children, ethnic minorities and sustainable development beyond 2015.
The session is also scheduled to discuss draft resolutions on human rights in several countries before its conclusion on March 28.
