PetroVietnam Press Release

(MOFA - 5/5/2014) - On May 2nd 2014, the China National Offshore Oil Corporation moved drilling rig HD-981 for operation at the location of 15029’ north latitude, 111012’ east longitude, about 120 nautical miles from the Vietnamese coast, which is within the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf of Viet Nam. This constitutes a violation of Viet Nam’s sovereign rights and jurisdiction under the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

On May 4th 2014, the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Group sent a note to the Chairman and CEO of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation to express strong protest against this activity and requested the latter to immediately halt its illegal operation and withdraw drilling rig HD-981 from the Vietnamese waters.

The China National Offshore Oil Corporation’s activity runs counter to the spirit of cooperation between two national oil and gas groups, the international practice of oil and gas operations and the cooperation and friendship between Viet Nam and China.

The Viet Nam’s Oil and Gas Group requests the China National Offshore Oil Corporation to refrain from conducting similar activity.
