VN, UN discuss top priorities

VGP – Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday discussed on a range of UN’s current top priorities and bilateral cooperation between Viet Nam and the organization.
Both sides underlined the importance and necessity of achieving a post-2015 development agenda, sustainable development goals as well as a new international climate change agreement this year.

As one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, Viet Nam has actively deployed a number of measures to cope with its impacts, said Deputy PM, FM Minh, affirming that the country will continue its efforts in realizing the aforesaid goals.

The two sides also agreed to further strengthen the bilateral cooperation between Viet Nam and the UN.

Deputy PM, FM Minh took the occasion to highly value the UN’s effective assistance for Viet Nam, including the deployment of the Delivering as One and the Green One UN House in the Southeast Asian country.

He asked the UN to continue its support for peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law while discussing with the UN chief the recent developments and tensions in the East Sea.

Mr. Ban Ki-moon expressed his concern that the current disputes in the East Sea have intensified tensions in the region.

He affirmed that the UN stands ready to provide support to accelerate the peaceful settlement of disputes among relevant parties and called on ASEAN and China to quickly conclude a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.

The UN Chief spoke highly of the efforts and constructive contributions of Viet Nam to the UN, especially the country’s participation in the UN Human Rights Council for the tenure 2014-2016, peacekeeping operations, fulfillment of many millennium development goals ahead of schedule and implementation of the Delivering as One.
