Ambassador of Viet Nam to the UN: Ambassador Thao’s election to ILC a great honour of Viet Nam
New York (VNA) - Ambassador Dr. Nguyen Hong Thao’s election to the UN International Law Commission (ILC) for the 2017-2021 tenure is a great honour for Viet Nam, showing the confidence of the international community in him and their recognition of the engagement of Vietnam in various global fields.
The statement was made by Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, head of the Viet Nam Mission to the UN, while commenting on the election of Ambassador Thao to the ILC during the 71st General Assembly of the United Nations on November 3 in New York.
The world community lauded Viet Nam’s policy of respecting international law in international relations, both bilaterally and multilaterally, regionally and internationally, she said.
Viet Nam’s principle of peacefully settling all disputes based on international law and strictly implementing international commitments has also been lauded, stated the diplomat.
Ambassador Thao’s success is also a result of ceaseless efforts during the past year of the Foreign Ministry as well as representative offices of Viet Nam abroad, including the Viet Nam Mission to the UN in assisting the diplomat in running for the position.
Ambassador Nga said that Thao’s election to the ILC for the 2017-2021 period is significant as international law is proving important. Amidst rapid changes in the world with many complicated issues and challenges in peace, security, development and human right, the international legal system should be completed to meet the requirements of new situations.
She also expressed her belief that with his experience and knowledge as a lawyer and a diplomat, Ambassador Thao will represent Vietnam and developing countries to make a positive contribution to the ILC.
