Viet Nam holds talks with US on WTO membership
Ha Noi (VNA) - Viet Nam has been conducting bilateral negotiations in Washington with the United States on joining the World Trade Organisation (WTO), according to sources from the office of the National Committee for International Economic Cooperation.
The talks, which began on Mar 14, are expected to last three days. Sources further said that bilateral negotiations between Viet Nam and eight other WTO members, namely Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Colombia, India, Iceland and Paraguay, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from Feb. 22-24, obtained positive results and have met Viet Nam's and its partners' requirements.
Viet Nam and the foreign negotiators further clarified outstanding issues and worked out concrete measures so as to conclude bilateral talks at the earliest possible date.
Vietnamese negotiators, including representatives of the Ministries of Trade, Finance, Post and Telematics, and Construction, the State Bank of Viet Nam and the National Committee for International Economic Cooperation, put forward the new concessions, to further open the country's goods and service market, that Viet Nam is willing to make.
Several partners expressed their strong support for Viet Nam's bid to join the world biggest trade body and eased their requirements on the speed of goods and service market liberation for the country. They noted that the current differences between Viet Nam and its foreign partners are not that great and expressed their hope that Viet Nam will be admitted to the WTO at its Economic Ministerial Meeting in Hong Kong later this year.
Bilateral talks between Viet Nam and Japan ended in Ho Chi Minh City last week. The two sides reached agreement on the areas of tariffs, intellectual property, services liberalisation, banking, transportation, and goods distribution./.
