Positive results on negotiations to join the WTO

Ha Noi, Mar 30 (VNA) -  The 10th round of multi-lateral negotiations on Viet Nam's admission to the World Trade Organisation will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, next May.

The round will focus on completing Viet Nam's reports on its efforts to gain membership of the world's biggest trade body.

At a recent meeting with Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An in Geneva, WTO General Director and Secretariat members have all voiced their support for Viet Nam's entry into the WTO.

According to the National Committee for International Economic Cooperation, the latest round of negotiations between Viet Nam and the US, which took place in Washington, DC, on Mar. 14-16, achieved positive results. The talks were held to discuss a breakdown of goods and services that Viet Nam will open up to US providers once admitted to the WTO.

Viet Nam and Canada achieved an encouraging outcome following their first bilateral talks in Ottawa, Canada, on Mar 17-18. The Scandinavian country has made practical moves in exercising its commitment to supporting Viet Nam to be soon admitted to the WTO. Viet Nam made progress in further opening its goods and service markets so as to considerably narrow down the differences between two sides. Previously, Vietnamese and Canadian negotiators had met seven times on the sidelines of sessions of the WTO working group on Viet Nam's WTO admission.

Both Canada and the US agreed with Viet Nam on further exchanging information in all channels so as to conduct next rounds of bilateral talks on the sidelines of the coming 10th round of multilateral negotiations.

Viet Nam in the first three months of this year held 15 sessions of bilateral talks with WTO members, including, the US, Canada, China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, India and several Latin American countries.
