Vietnamese Ambassador keen on raising Viet Nam-US relationship to new heights
(VNA) - Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Tam Chien said his highest concern at present is how to attract more foreign investment in Viet Nam and to lift the Viet Nam-US relationship to new heights of development.
Ten years after the normalisation of diplomatic ties, the Viet Nam-US relationship has matured, the Vietnamese diplomat said, adding that bilateral ties have been expanded to various fields, including cooperation between the two armies. "The Defence Minister of Viet Nam recently paid a visit to the US," Chien said.
According to the Ambassador, bilateral trade between Viet Nam and the US rocketed following the signing of the bilateral trade agreement. He pointed out that two way trade reached more than 6 billion USD last year.
The Vietnamese diplomat said a new chapter in the bilateral relationship is necessary for both Viet Nam and the US. He called on the two sides to strive for that goal.
Ambassador Chien said he is willing to resolve outstanding issues in bilateral ties in the spirit of friendship and mutual understanding.
He also recalled the Vietnamese people's sentiment on the day of national liberation and reunification 30 years ago. "It is not only the national reunification but also the reunion of families," Chien said.
The Vietnamese people had to suffer many losses during the war, which only brings about bad things, Ambassador Chien said.
However, instead of living in the past, the Vietnamese people are paying attention to national development, attracting investment and the reconstruction of their war-torn country, he noted.
The Vietnamese people have been exerting efforts in carrying out the "sacred mission" of the present generation of fighting corruption to successfully build socialism, Chien added.
