Vietnam Airlines carries 6.8 million passengers in 2006
The national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has said that it transported over 6.8 million passengers in 2006, nearly 1 million more than the previous year, and 106,600 tonnes of cargo.
The airlines recorded a seat occupancy rate of 71.9 percent and a market share of 59.3 percent of the transport service industry despite fuel price hikes, fierce competition in air transport services and threats of bird flu outbreaks.
This is the 10th consecutive year Vietnam Airlines has ensured flight safety. The airlines recently became a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) after meeting IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA).
Last year, Vietnam Airlines signed a contract with American Airlines to conduct flights to the US and opened a direct route between Ha Noi and Luong Prabang in Laos. It also worked out a plan to open a non-stop route to the US by the end of 2007. (VNA)
