Deputy PM Khiem pays official visit to Holland

Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem paid an official visit to Holland from Sept. 19-20 at the invitation of Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen.

Hague (VNA) – During the visit, Deputy PM Khiem held talks with the Dutch FM and Frank Heemskerk, Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Affairs State Secretary on Sept. 19.

The two sides informed each other of the socio-economic situation and foreign policies of their respective countries. They were pleased at the fine development of the bilateral relations over the past 35 years.

Deputy PM Khiem and FM Verhagen exchanged views on measures to boost Vietnam-Holland relations, especially in the areas of economy, trade, investment, development cooperation, science and technology, education and training, culture, tourism, natural resources and environment.

Deputy PM Khiem thanked the Dutch government and people for their valuable assistance to Vietnam.

Khiem also expressed his thanks to the Dutch government for its support of Vietnam in talks with the EC on matters relating to the anti-dumping tax against Vietnamese leather-capped shoes and the Generalized System of Preference (GSP). He requested the Dutch government to continue to support Vietnam in the renewal process and international integration, help Vietnam enhance relations with the EU and create favourable conditions for Vietnam to export products to Holland and the EU.

FM Verhagen praised Vietnam ’s achievements in socio-economic development and international integration. He congratulated Vietnam for successfully fulfilling the UN Security Council chair’s term of office and expressed his hope to promote cooperation with Vietnam in the United Nations and other international organisations.

The Dutch side praised Vietnam’s role as a coordinator in the negotiation for the ASEAN-EU Free Trade Agreement, and affirmed its support for Vietnam in the Partnership Cooperation Agreement (PCA) negotiation with the EU.

The same day, Deputy PM Khiem attended a Vietnam-Holland business forum marking the 35 th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties.

More than 100 Dutch businesses attended the forum to inquire into investment opportunities in Vietnam, especially in shipping, shipbuilding, energy, finance and banking, insurance, high-tech and telecoms.

Deputy PM Khiem called on Dutch businesses to support the elimination of anti-dumping tax levied on Vietnamese leather-capped shoes and an early recognition of the Vietnamese market economy.

During the visit, Deputy PM Khiem visited the headquarters of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the Dutch Social and Economic Council and Rotterdam port.
