Asia, Europe to promote socio-economic development

(VNS - 18/5/2019) Extensive research was needed for sustainable development to eradicate poverty and ensure food, energy and water security.

Experts made the statement at the closing session of the Asian-Europe Meeting (ASEM) yesterday in the central province of Khánh Hòa.

The two-day conference focused on important topics such as the overarching development of the Fourth Industrial Revolution 4.0, the experience and practice of achieving the goal of “leaving no one behind” and strengthening co-operation between the two continents on socio-economic development.

The conference emphasised that Agenda 2030 for sustainable development and the Paris Agreement on climate change were global frameworks to address the core issues of development. They created a new driving force for economic restructuring, promoting green economy and enhancing self-reliance among people, communities and nations.

Experiences were also shared at the conference, especially on enhancing social connectivity, finance, initiatives for inclusive growth and welfare systems for people with disabilities.

ASEM members highly appreciated Việt Nam’s efforts, and confirmed they would continue working with the country to implement projects in order to reach the sustainable development targets.

At the closing session, the conference agreed on solutions to enhance co-ordination within ASEM. The highlight was to promote ASEM’s contribution to the global effort to implement Agenda 2030 for sustainable development and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The conference unified awareness and action to ensure that sustainable and creative development would become the highest target of growth and motivation for prosperity. People would be placed at the centre of development in all ASEM initiatives and co-operation.

ASEM members also agreed to continue to support developing members in finance, experience exchange and green and clean technology transfer.

The conference agreed to approve a report to submit to the 14th ASEM Foreign Ministerial Conference in Spain in December this year, and the 13th ASEM Summit in Cambodia next year.
