Regarding US Commerce Department's decision on Vietnamese shrimp
ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN
OF THE VIETNAMESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON 8th JULY 2004
AFP, AP, Bloomberg, Xinhua News Agency and Thanh nien newspaper: Please advise Vietnam’s comment on the recent preliminary ruling by the US DOC to apply anti-dumping duties on Vietnamese shrimp exported to the US?
Answer:
We find the US Commerce Department’s preliminary decision regrettable.
Once again, I would like to confirm that, in fact, Vietnamese shrimp entrepreneurs do not dump shrimp on any market, including the US market. Thanks to application of advanced technology, favorable natural environment and low labor costs, the shrimp price in Vietnam is lower than that in the US.
Vietnam’s economy in general and its shrimp farming, processing and export in particular operate under market mechanism. The Vietnamese Government does not provide any subsidy under any form to the entrepreneurs or interfere in their business activities.
Vietnam hopes that the US DoC will reconsider this decision with an objective and fair approach that conforms to actual conditions of shrimp farming and export in Vietnam and in accordance with the spirit of the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement and the policy of trade liberalization stated by the US. This will not only contribute to promoting Vietnam-US economic and trade ties but also safeguard legitimate interests of the US consumer and shrimp importer and distributors.
