Regarding the sentence by the Thai court of the criminal who laid bombs to terrorize the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN

OF THE VIETNAMESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON 21st JUNE 2004

Reuters correspondent: Please provide Vietnam's reaction to the sentencing by a Thai criminal Court on June 17 of Vietnamese citizen Phan Nguyen Thanh Hien Si and two other criminals for an attempted bombing of the Vietnamese Embassy in Bangkok in 2001?

Answer:

Vietnam welcomes the sentence by the Thai criminal court of Phan Nguyen Thanh Hien Si, one of the four criminals who laid bombs to terrorize the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand on June 19, 2001. This action is totally in line with the spirit of the bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and Thailand in the field of security and anti-terrorism.

By the way, we would like to inform that the US Court has recently ruled that Vo Van Duc, an accomplice of Phan Nguyen Thanh Hien Si, would be extradited to Thailand for trial as requested by the Thai Government.

Once again, we call upon Thailand to request that the US soon extradite Vo Van Duc to Thailand for trial so as to help prevent terrorist activities in the region and in the world over and conform to the spirit of the bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and Thailand and between Vietnam and the US in combating terrorism activities as well as the 1 August 2002 ASEAN - United States of America Joint Declaration for Cooperation to Combat International Terrorism.
