Information on recent situation in some areas in the Central Highland provinces

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENTS BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN
OF
VIETNAM’S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON 12th APRIL 2004

Many correspondents ask for information on recent situation in some areas in the Central Highland provinces.

Answer:

Over the past few days, some extremist elements in several localities in Daklak and Gialai provinces, with instigation from outside, have carried out activities of causing public disorder. They even fought against authorities, damaging public welfare works and assets in some communes. Local authorities have taken measures to stabilize the situation. All aspects of life in these areas are still normal.

I herein would like to  strongly assert that the Vietnamese State’s consistent policy is to consolidate the great national unity and always improve material and spiritual life of all strata of people with special care given to those living in mountainous, remote and out-of-reach areas, including the Central Highland provinces. This policy is widely recognized and appreciated by the international community. At the same time, we vehemently reject all ill-willed distortive rhetorics on the so-called “ethnic and religious persecution” in
Vietnam.
