Vietnam is fully capable of preventing the return of SARS

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN OF THE VIETNAMESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON 27th APRIL 2004

DPA correspondent: What is Vietnam’s reaction to the news that there may be two new cases of SARS in China? What measures is Vietnam undertaking to prevent the return of the disease? Will Vietnam step up measures to prevent the the return of the disease to Vietnam? How confident is Vietnam that SARS will not return to the country?

Answer:

Vietnam pays great attention to and follows very closely development of the SARS epidemic in the world, especially in China.

As soon as some new SARS cases in China were notified, the National Steering Commission on SARS Prevention and Control convened a meeting and requested that Steering Committees on SARS Prevention and Control in provinces and cities continue to instruct their local medical agencies to intensify health quarantine activities at border areas, closely monitoring those entering Vietnam from SARS-hit regions, getting necessary medicine ready, setting up isolation centers and providing timely treatment to detected SARS patients, if any. The National Steering Commission on SARS Prevention and Control continuously updates information on the situation to report to the Prime Minister aimed at introducing prompt preventive measures against the possible return of SARS to Vietnam.

We are convinced that under the Government direct guidance, with the coordination among Ministries, agencies and international organizations and active preventive measures undertaken by the National Steering Commission on SARS Prevention and Control, Vietnam is fully capable of preventing the epidemic.
