Rejecting fabrication by the Freedom House

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN
OF
VIETNAM’S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON 24th MAY 2004

Reuters: Please advise
Vietnam’s comment on a report issued by the Freedom House that says in late March four Hmong Christians were sentenced to jail because of holding weekly prayer services in a house church.  Please advise Vietnam’s reaction to the accusation that the Vietnam’s government has launched an “intensified anti-Christian campaign”?

Answer:

We strongly reject fabrication on the so-called “intensified anti-Hmong Christian campaign” by the Freedom House. The consistent policy of Vietnam is to respect and guarantee freedom of beliefs and religious freedom as well as the freedom of non- beliefs and non- religious freedom of all citizens. This is enshrined in the Constitution and respected in practice. Religious activities of every citizen in general and those of ethnic minority people including the H’mong in particular are conducted as usual.

In
Vietnam, no one is arrested or detained on the grounds of religion, only those who violated the law will be punished in accordance with regulations of the law.
