Regarding Vietnam's accession to WTO

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN

OF THE VIETNAMESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON 20th DECEMBER 2004

AFP correspondent: Please advise list of countries that have accomplished bilateral negotiations with Vietnam and outcomes of Vietnam's negotiations with some major partners like the United States, China and Japan? Which WTO member does Vietnam have the greatest difficulty in negotiating with? Which is the schedule of the National Assembly of Vietnam to approve its accession to WTO?

Which are the final agreements Vietnam is required to reach to accede to WTO by December 2005 and when will negotiations on these agreements be accomplished?

Answer:

On 15th December 2004, the 9th round of meetings of the WTO Working Party on Vietnam accession took place in Geneva, Switzerland. During the round, Vietnam and negotiating partners discussed the first draft of the Report on Vietnam membership. The round took place in a favourable atmosphere as many countries voiced their support for Vietnam entry.

Along side the 9th meeting, Vietnam held bilateral negotiations with some partners including Mexico, Colombia, Paraguay, Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Canada, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland.

Previously, Vietnam had accomplished negotiations with 6 partners, namely, the EU, Cuba, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Singapore. Vietnam hopes that her future negotiations with other countries including the major trading partners such as the United States, China and Japan will take place favourably, paving the way for Vietnam to soon join WTO.
