the law suit of Agent Orange/Dioxin victims against American chemical companies ís a legitimate action

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT BY MR. LE DZUNG, THE SPOKESMAN

OF THE VIETNAMESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON 3rd MARCH 2005

Tuoi tre (Youth) Newspaper correspondent: Please advise Vietnam's position on the U.S Justice Department's recommendation to dismiss the law suit of Agent Orange/Dioxin victims against American chemical companies.

Answer:

The Agent Orange/Dioxin that the US army used during the war in Vietnam has caused severe consequences to human health and the environment in the country. Over 40 years have elapsed but these consequences still profoundly affect the socio-economic life in Vietnam. This fact is affirmed by many scientists, including American scientists.

This is a civil law suit between the Agent Orange/Dioxin victims in Vietnam and the American chemical companies who produced those deadly toxics. This law suit has drawn great attention and gained strong support from the world community.

We consider this a legitimate action of the Vietnamese victims. U.S. veterans, who came to Vietnam during the war and suffer from diseases related to Agent Orange/Dioxin, have also sued US chemical companies. This shows legal responsibility for the victims borne by  Agent Orange/Dioxin producers./.
