ANSWERS QUESTION ON 14 OCTOBER 2006

Question : Please advise Vietnam’s point of view on the election of the ROK Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon as UN Secretary General in replacement of Mr. Kofi Annan?

Answer :

Vietnam would like to extend welcome and congratulation to ROK Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon for his being elected UN Secretary General. We believe that Mr. Ban Ki-Moon will successfully fulfill his task as the UN Secretary General and make active contribution to the development of this biggest international organization, especially admist the intensive and extensive reform in the United Nations so as to meet the aspiration and interest of UN members.

Vietnam became an official member of the United Nations on 20 September 1977. Since then, the relations between Vietnam and the United Nations have been increasingly strengthened and developed. Over the past years, UN representatives in Vietnam have made practical activities to assist Vietnam in various areas. Vietnam, for her part, has proactively participated in and actively contributed to UN common tasks.

We hope that the fine relations between Vietnam and the United Nations will be further promoted in the coming years.
