Regular Press Briefing by MOFA’s Spokesman on 20th September 2007
At the MOFA’s regular press briefing, Mr. Le Dung, Spokesman of the MOFA informed the participants of the following diplomatic activities:
1. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to attend the General Debate of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly from 24th to 28th Sept 2007
From 24 to 28 September 2007, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will head a Vietnam’s delegation to attend the General Debate of 62nd annual session of the UN General Assembly.
At the General Debate (25 September to 5 October 2007), leaders will deliver speeches to express their opinions, view points and major policies on emerging issues attracting the interest of the international community, thereby promoting discussion and proposing settlement orientations. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Head of the Vietnam’s delegation, is expected to give a speech on 27 September 2007. On the sideline of the General Debate, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will have bilateral meetings with leaders of some countries.
For Vietnam, the General Debate of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly is of special significance because at this session, a vote for Vietnam’s non - permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for 2008 -2009 term will be held (scheduled on 16 October 2007), coinciding with the 30th anniversary the UN membership of Vietnam.
2. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to visit the French Republic
At the invitation of French Prime Minister François Fillon, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will pay an official visit to the French Republic from 30 September to 3 October 2007.
The visit is aimed at strengthening friendship and mutual trust between Vietnam and France, establishing relations between leaders of the two countries; promoting economic relations in depth; discussing measures to create new impetus to the development of trade, investment, technology transfer, ODA, culture, education and tourism.
During the visit, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will hold talks with French Prime Minister François Fillon, meet several French parliamentarians, receive leaders from some French giant co-operations, representatives from the Vietnamese community in France and visit some localities and economic and cultural establishments of France.
The visit aims to promote the bilateral relation along the guideline “traditional friendship, comprehensive, long-term, trust worthy cooperation in the 21st century” which has been set by the two countries’ high-ranking leaders.
On this occasion, Vietnam will organize “Vietnam days in France”. This activity will contribute to promoting image of the country, its people, and investment and business environment among the French business community and people, attracting investment and tourism from France and the EU, strengthening cooperative relations among the business communities of Vietnam, France and the EU.
3. The ACMECS Summit and the CLMV Summit
The 4th Summit of four countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) and the 3rd Ayeyawady - Chao Phraya - Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit will be held in Hanoi from 23 to 26 October 2007.
These summits will focus on three important issues:
- Reviewing ACMECS and CLMV cooperation
- Determining ACMECS and CLMV cooperation
- Adopting the Summits’ documents
