The State of Vietnam always respects the rights to freedom and democracy of its citizens
ANSWERS QUESTION ON MARCH 13th, 2008
Question: Please provide Vietnam’s reaction to the 2007 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices released by the U.S. Department of State on March 11, 2008 including remarks on Vietnam?
Answer:
It is regrettable that the US State Department’s 2007 Human Rights Report still produces subjective assessments based on biased and wrongful information about the real situation in Vietnam.
During the past years, Viet Nam has gained great achievements in ensuring and improving its citizens’ rights to freedom in all fields, including freedom of speech, press and information. This is clearly manifested through strong developments of the mass media, especially the Internet. These achievements are widely recognized and appreciated by the international community.
The State of Vietnam always respects the rights to freedom and democracy of its citizens. However, as other nations in the world, the State of Vietnam does not accept abuse of the rights to freedom and democracy to violate the law. In Vietnam there is no political suppression, nobody is detained for his political views or religion, and there are only cases where legal violators are dealt with in compliance with Vietnamese laws.
It is normal for Vietnam and the US to have different views on human rights. Our opinion is that increasing contacts and dialogues on the basis of equality and non-interference into each other’s internal affairs will help promote mutual understanding between Vietnam and the US in this respect, contributing to boosting the bilateral relations in the spirit of Vietnam- US Joint Declarations reached by the high ranking leaders of the two countries in May 2005 and November 2006.
