(MOFA) - On 17 March 2016, answering reporters’ questions on Viet Nam’s response to recent activities by China in the Hoang Sa Archipelago, such as sending a cruise ship to Oc Hoa Island, building airport on Tree Island, and reclaiming land in Amphitrite Cluster, MOFA Spokesperson Le Hai Binh stated:
“Viet Nam reaffirms its indisputable sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa Archipelagos.
China’s continuous reclamation and construction activities alter the status quo in the Hoang Sa Archipelago. These activities, plus its tours to the archipelago, despite the concerns expressed by Viet Nam and the international community, seriously violate Viet Nam’s sovereignty. They not only go against the common viewpoint of high-ranking leaders of both countries and the Viet Nam – China Agreement on Basic Principles Guiding the Settlement of Sea Issues, create negative impact on bilateral relations but also violate international law and the DOC signed between ASEAN and China in 2002 as well as complicate the situation.
Viet Nam resolutely rejects and strongly opposes the above-said activities by China. We request China to immediately stop and avoid repetition of similar activities, respect Viet Nam’s sovereignty and international law, and practically contribute to the enhancement of Viet Nam – China friendship and cooperation, as well as the maintenace of peace and stability in the East Sea.”
