On 31 August 2023, in response to reporter's question regarding Viet Nam's position on the release of the "2023 edition of China's standard map" by the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources, which includes Viet Nam's Paracel and Spratly Islands, Ms. Pham Thu Hang, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam stated that:

"The release of the so-called "2023 edition of China's standard map" by the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources, which includes Viet Nam's Paracel and Spratly Islands, and China's dotted line claim are violations of Viet Nam's sovereignty over Paracel and Spratly Islands, and of Viet Nam's sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction over its waters as provided by the UNCLOS 1982. Thus, China's sovereignty and maritime claims based on this dotted line, as showcased in the above map, are null and void. Such claims go against international law, particularly the UNCLOS 1982.

Viet Nam once again reiterates its consistent position regarding its sovereignty over Paracel and Spratly Islands, and resolutely opposes China's claims in the South China Sea based on the dotted line./.".
