Remarks by MOFA Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang on the Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien-Loong's speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue and the status posted on his Facebook on 31 May, which stated that Viet Nam had “invaded” and “occupied” Cambodia
(MOFA) - On 4 June 2019, in response to questions from the press regarding the Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien-Loong's speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue and the status posted on his Facebook on 31 May, which stated that Viet Nam had “invaded” and “occupied” Cambodia, the Spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam underlined:
“Viet Nam finds it regrettable that certain elements of the speech did not view history under an objective lens, causing negative impact on the public opinion. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam has discussed this matter with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore.
The contribution and sacrifices that Viet Nam had made in the fight alongside the people of Cambodia to put an end to the genocidal crime of the Khmer Rouge is a widely acknowledged truth, On 16 November 2018, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) issued a verdict on the genocide and crimes against humanity committed by the Khmer Rouge. This verdict is an objective testimony to historical truth, serves justice and makes restitution to the victims, which was welcomed by the United Nations and the international community.
The achievements that ASEAN enjoy today are a result of the joint effort of all members throughout its history as an Association. Every member deeply understands the importance of constantly bolstering the unity of the Association as a whole, on the basis of respecting one another and observing the common principles of ASEAN.
As an active and responsible member of ASEAN, Viet Nam has worked, and shall continue to work, along with the other members to commit our utmost to the goal forging a strong and united ASEAN Community in solidarity, that shall play a central role in the region.”
