Introduction of the World Economic Forum and its relations with Viet Nam
1. About the World Economic Forum (WEF)
The WEF is one of the most prestigious and effective global forum that actract the attention and participation of leaders from most of the major countries, international organizations as well as corporations around the world. Every year, WEF hosts global and regional fora with participation from leaders of governments, corporations, social organizations, scholars from around the world to discuss economic and development issues as well as other worlds affairs. The most important WEF event is the annual meeting held in late January in Davos, Switzerland. Besides, WEF hosts various regional fora, notably the WEF East Asia , the WEF TianJin (or Dalian) in China, WEF India, WEF Latin America or WEF Middle East. Regional fora are place to exchange view and analysis on regional development issues.
2. WEF – Viet Nam relations
Viet Nam and WEF established relations in 1989. Viet Nam senior leaders regularly participated annual WEF in Davos and WEF East Asia. WEF executive director Philipp Rosler visited Viet Nam in various occasions (November 2014, July 2015, April 2016).
2.1. Publicity on Viet Nam Economy
- WEF Davos: Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s participation in WEF Davos in 2007 and 2010 held important significance, paving way for new period of development of Viet Nam – WEF relations. In other years, Viet Nam sends a Deputy Prime Minister to attend the annual meeting.
- WEF East Asia and Viet Nam participation: In recent years, Viet Nam has actively engaged in WEF East Asia events, with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attending WEF East Asia in Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
WEF East Asia 2010 in Viet Nam: taking place on June 6 – 7, 2010 in Ho Chi Minh City, WEF East Asia had 450 participants, including senior leaders from other countries, such as Prime Ministers of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam, Chinese Vice Chairman of the People’s Political Consultative Conference and leaders of international organizations and multinational corporates, world renowned scholars.
WEF regional meetings: Viet Nam often sends its senior official (deputy ministerial level) of Ministries of Science and Technology, Information and Communication to participate in WEF Dalian/TianJin meetings in China.
2.2. Cooperation in some areas
Viet Nam and WEF closely cooperate in agriculture. Viet Nam is one of the WEF major partners in “New vision in agriculture” initiative. Agriculture Minister Cao Duc Phat in various occasions participated in the WEF annual meetings.
During the visit to Viet Nam by WEF Executive Director Philipp Rosler in November 2014, WEF and Viet Nam successfully co-hosted a seminar themed “the role of businesses in enhancing the national competitiveness in international integration.”
In 2016, Trade and Industry Minister Tran Tuan Anh participated in WEF Coordination Board for “Future of production system” project.
3. Participation of the Vietnamese businesses
Viet Nam currently has 11 big corporations that participate in WEF, namely Viettel, FPT, Vingroup, VinaCapital (as Institutional members); VNPT, Vietcombank, SIG, AA Architecture Joint Stock Company, DatvietVAC, Hoa Sen Group, Vietnam Industrial Investment Ltd (Forum members.)
